2013 Scotch Pong World Championships - West St. Paul, MN

Last November, our friend Dantigravity came up with a concept for something that had potential to be life-altering – Scotch Pong. It’s like Beer Pong, but much classier. Dantigravity thought D.Rough and I should host this event, since we have the room to pull off a party of this magnitude. If you’re unfamiliar with Beer Pong, I’ll give you the basics: You set up a triangle of red solo cups at each end of a long table (like a bowling pin configuration). Then, one member of each team throws or bounces a ping pong ball and tries to get it into the cups at the opposite end of the table. If the ball goes in the cup, that opposing team has to drink what’s in the cup. Simple, right? Now let’s look at some numbers. Beer generally has 3-7% alcohol by volume. Scotch has 40-50% alcohol by volume. Do you see where we are going with this? I had to come up with some way for people not to DIE at this event. I thought we’d go with just a shot of scotch in the cups, rather than a mostly full cup. Also, we’d only use 6 cups, instead of 10 cups. Still too deadly, in my opinion. This event is a double elimination tournament, so participants would be playing a minimum of two complete games. And people sometimes forget to drink water during these events, so I needed to add water into the game. That lead to three cups of water and three cups of scotch for each team.
Then, these games could go pretty quickly, so I needed to come up with a way to drag this out as long as possible,. If participants were required to drink multiple shots quickly, things were going to go south FAST. So…… I changed the red solo cups to glass low-ball (old fashioned) glasses. You might think this isn’t a big change, but it turned out to be the greatest impact on the evening. It is REALLY difficult to get a ping pong ball to go into a glass cup, even with liquid inside the cup. I bought a case of low-ball glasses from a bar supply store and did some trial runs. Plus, drinking scotch out of glass cups is more classy, and we’re all about class at the Scotch Pong World Championships.
Due to the high alcohol content for the evening, the official Twitter hashtag for the event was #MassSuicideFest2013. Thank you, TempleOfDoom for coming up with that most appropriate moniker for the event. And everything is more fun with FUN-fetti cake!!!The entry fee was simple for this event – bring a new or full-ish bottle of whatever scotch you would like to drink. We had one team accidentally bring Irish whiskey and we would not let them participate. However, KingDavid had brought a bottle of Islay Mist (clearly the Arbor Mist of Scotland), and happily donated it to the team so they could play. Thank you, KingDavid, for your generous donation.
I won’t go into details about the entire night, but it was one of the most fun parties D.Rough and I have ever thrown. We encouraged people to dress formally, since it was a fancy event. Many people did dress up and it enhanced the atmosphere of the entire night. I even broke out a new ascot for the night. (I had already taken off my tux jacket by this point - sorry it didn't make it in the photo)We had eight teams participating in this double elimination tournament with only one team swap out when one team went home ill (flu-related, not alcohol-related). Awkward Taco was under the weather to begin with, and coincidentally, The Kool-Aid Kids arrived just as Awkward Taco forfeited the game.We had The Highlander and Braveheart showing on the television to highlight the Scottish heritage of this event. We also realized that we had inadvertently scheduled the event on Robert Burns’ (famous Scottish poet) birthday. What better way to honor his fine work than with a Scotch-drinking event. We had a crowd of designated drivers, spouses, live-tweeters, photographers, and revelry-lovers. This group provided much cheering and heckling and even some food to help participants absorb alcohol. I’m so glad we had spectators to witness the shenanigans. There were numerous upsets and nail-biting rounds. Many matches came down to one cup for each team. That cup is extremely difficult to drop a ping pong ball into, especially using glass cups. video
In the end, Team Casual (featuring our very own M.Giant and his partner whom he hadn’t met before that night) triumphed TWICE over Bearded Wonders (featuring B.Sweet and ME!!!). Bearded Wonders only had to win one of the two games to win the title and we managed to get both games down to one cup for each team before Team Casual swooped in for the win. Team Casual had to win both games to win the title (which they did). It was an intense battle, but seriously, it was incredible fun for everyone.(Thanks for the photo, Spike!)
Some other hilarious things that happened:
  • Team Commander Stein didn’t realize “cask strength” means super-alcohol-y scotch
  • Man wearing ascot vs. Man in Tuxedo
  • Team Dan Dan noticed after their second round, that their scotch was 10% higher ABV than everyone else’s
  • Space Jam was quite inspiring in Commander Stein’s gameplay, also thanks to Scar for top-notch coaching (You’re the best Mr. Fuji ever!)
  • Teams that pre-gamed before the event didn’t fare well
  • Unsanctioned extra-curricular scotch pong WILL, in fact, get you weavy-drunk
  • Irish AND Canadian whiskeys were barred from participation
  • Taki’s go with every party
  • More parties need roller derby infield seating
  • We even had some subtle product placement from the Twin Cities Terrors’s newest men’s roller derby team – The Thunderjacks! Nicely played, gentlemen.

Here is the final bracket for the night. Very impressive, mainly in people’s ability to hold their liquor.

And finally, the most hilarious part of the night (and a little before and after): the Twitter feed for the evening. It was quite entertaining to read. I broke it all down to only related tweets, to make your lives easier. But, if you are into twitter at all, you’ll be highly amused by the live event tracking for our home viewers. Open this document (which is in Word) and start at the bottom of the page and read up to the top. You’ll thank me later.

Huge thanks to all the participants, spectators, live tweeters, referees, photographers, food-bringers, and designated drivers. We couldn't have done it without you all!

Asia Bistro - Woodbury, MN

D.Rough was in the mood for sushi and also had a groupon for Asia Bistro – what bad could happen? We drove over there to find out what bad could happen…

The inside is tastefully decorated with various Asian artifacts and decorations. It wasn’t overwhelming and it wasn’t sparse. There are also some randomly placed tables in the room with wine bottles on them – likely to indicate to people that they should drink wine at this classy place. And it honestly is one of the classier Asian restaurants we’ve been to.
We looked at the lunch menu and after some panicky moments and asking the really nice waitress, we found out they don’t serve Sushi on Mondays until 4pm. Every other day, yes to sushi, but not Mondays. Super bummer. Really. However, we turned this tragedy into an opportunity!!! Now we were going to see how good the cooks in back were by ordering random things we wouldn’t have ordered if we got sushi.

With the groupon, we had to spend a lot. That lead us to the Pu-Pu Platter (which we just love to say anyway). It’s got an egg roll, two cream cheese wontons, two chicken satay skewers, 2 coconut shrimp, and some tempura vegetables. Perfect. Fried, fried, and more fried! I got the Triple Crown and D.Rough got the Thai Basil Chicken. We asked our server about the spice level here and she indicated it was more of a “Minnesota spice”, rather than a normal person spice. So we got ours spicy.
The appetizer sampler came out first and surprisingly, we one of the best pu-pu platters we’ve ever gotten. Everything was perfectly cooked, which I know isn’t easy to do with tempura vegetables. The egg roll was perfectly crispy and filled with delicious cabbage and maybe some pork? Really quite good with the dipping sauces provided. The satay had some sort of glaze on it and was extremely tender, and went perfectly with the peanut dipping sauce. The coconut shrimp was sweet and crunchy and fully cooked, and the cream cheese wontons weren’t greasy at all, somehow. The tempura vegetables were just the right finisher and we ended up dipping them in all of the remaining sauces.

The entrees came out right after we finished our sampler and we were a little surprised at how vibrant the color of the food was and also how good it smelled. It was going to be a fantastic lunch, we could tell. The Thai Basil Chicken had a fantastic glaze covering all of the red and green peppers, onion, broccoli, basil leaves, and chicken. And you could see red flecks of spicy magic throughout the entire dish. There wasn’t a speck of grease anywhere, either visually nor in your mouth when you ate it. The sauce was a sort of red curry with coconut milk and was a fantastic flavor that went with the chicken perfectly. We were both a little blown away by this dish. So much so, that we boxed up half of this dish to bring home with us.
The Triple Crown is chicken, BBQ pork, and shrimp in a ginger and garlic sauce, stir fried with a bunch of veggies. I was honestly surprised at how flavorful this was. I thought it was going to be the standard garlic sauce and frozen vegetables I’ve gotten at other places, but this place woke me up a little bit. The vegetables were warm, but still firm and crunchy, and you could actually taste each one of the different meats. The sauce could have been a little bit spicier in my opinion, but I’m not complaining. I was able to eat it without crying or sweating, so I was thrilled with it.
I know it is difficult to put one Chinese (or Asian) place above any other, but this place stands up to Nationally-ranked Little Szechuan in St. Paul. Little Szechuan may have them in the actually-from-China authenticity category, but Asia Bistro gets top scores for flavor. Asia Bistro has atmosphere to make it more upscale, and it definitely has the flavors to make it memorable. I think getting take-out here would cheapen the place, but I know if I lived within a mile or two of here, I’d be here all the time. That being said, I’m trying to figure out when I can get out to Woodbury again. It would absolutely be worth a drive, especially since our friend SandblastHER lives in the apartment complex across the street from it and we need more excuses to go visit her.
Do yourself a favor and try this place out. It isn’t near the heart of either downtown, but I promise you won’t be mad at me if you drive out here and grab some food. This makes both of us want to come back and try the sushi, anyway. Now we have the perfect excuse to come back!

Top 5 things about Asia Bistro
1. Thai Basil Chicken
2. Triple Crown
3. Pu-Pu Platter
4. Fantastic menu filled with Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Japanese dishes
5. Upscale atmosphere

Bottom 5 things
1. No sushi on Monday’s for lunch (when we showed up)
2. It isn’t cheap Chinese food
3. It is victim to the Minnesota spice palate, so order accordingly or tell them you’re serious
4. It’s in a far eastern suburb that we normally don’t go to
5. There was a server job interview happening in the dining room during our meal – weird scenario and I felt bad for the interviewee. I hope he got the job!

  • If Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable?

    To contact us Click HERE
First of all, Adam and Eve never existed. The genetic variation of the human species is such that it could never have arisen from one breeding pair about 6,000 years ago (which is what the bible actually states). And, of course, this is before we take into consideration that Eve is somehow supposed to have been some kind of a gender-altered clone of Adam so that genetically, Adam was in effect breeding with himself.

Furthermore, the bible also states that we are not all descended from Adam and Eve because god is supposed to have wiped out the entire human population of the Earth in a gigantic flood, leaving only Noah, his wife and their children.

So even if god is supposed to have created people other than Adam and Eve so that there wasn't any inbreeding, he wiped them all out with the flood so that the children of Noah were required to commit incest if they were to repopulate the Earth.

As is now being demonstrated in the Muslim communities of the UK where marrying first cousins is commonplace, inbreeding causes numerous genetic problems, even from apparently healthy parents. In just a few generations the human race would have all but died out if we were all descended from Noah's children.

Yet one more reason why the bible is nothing more than a collection of Bronze Age myths and legends with no firm foundation in reality.

EDIT: "Just about every science source I've ever read from says we're descended from a small group of primates that originated in Africa" [flyingpig] - yes... that "small group" was never less than an estimated 60,000 individuals, all of whom inherited considerable genetic diversity from their ancestors on account of having been evolving for the previous 3 billion years, not created from nothing at one instant 6,000 years ago.If Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable?Well first of all, Adam and Eve had quite a few children.

As far as inbreeding. Just about every science source I've ever read from says we're descended from a small group of primates that originated in Africa.

Meaning, we're all inbred anyways. Maybe not to the same extent as if Adam and Eve only had two children, but enough to make you wonder how in the world the human race has survived all of these years. If Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable?
Well their two children were both boys so in fact they would have to pair up with their mum again, and hope that they get a girl before she hits menopause. Then savagely abuse the girl for years to come in the interests of populating the planet. God is pretty harsh deliberately giving two sons...If Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable? In the bible, God said he made Adam and Eve. But what he didn't say was that he also made other human beings. It was just not mentioned in the bible. The bible is not a science text book, it doesn't explain everything.
They had more than two children, but that's irrelevant.

"Unfavorable" only happens if there are deleterious recessives. Adam had no deleterious recessives. Eve (who was made from a piece of Adam) didn't either. If Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable?Yes, that is why Adam and Eve did not exist. Humans evolved out of apes. DNA proves that all humans originated in east Africa about 150,000 years ago, way beyond the Bible timeline. If Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable?
I'm pretty sure the person responsible for writing the bible didn't know much about inbreeding.
don't question the logic found in works of fiction... they don't need to make senseIf Adam and eve had 2 children, wouldn't their children have to inter-marry which is biologically unfavorable?
    do they have a choice?

Another spot that's been on my short list recently has been Scott's Walk-Up Bar-B-Que in Cartersville, GA. You walk up to the restaurant, walk up to the counter, place your order, and wait for the food to be brought out to you. I suppose a lot of BBQ places these days share the same "business model," but it still makes for an interesting BBQ joint name. I've heard that owner, Scott Panter, was very involved in the BBQ competition scene with a lot of success before deciding to open up his brick and mortar restaurant. Restaurant BBQ and competition BBQ aren't always a seamless transition so I was curious on what kind of food would make its way to the table. Restaurant BBQ and competition BBQ are two completely different beasts. Competition style focuses on one bite of BBQ while the other aims to make a great meal.

The GBH team had one of our most memorable BBQ experiences on our first ever visit to Scott's. When we "walked up" and sat inside we both noticed how quiet and dimly lit the whole place was. It had a "Walking Dead" post-zombie-apocalypse feel. This isn't usually the mood you try to achieve at a BBQ spot. It was shortly announced that all the power was out which made a little more sense. My best non-electrical background explanation was that some of the wires had crossed near one of the breakers. That sounds pretty official, right? Anyways, we were still able to place our orders even though there was no ice or active credit card machines. They said if we didn't have cash that we could just come back later and square everything up. Now that's good people.

My $20 bill was worth a half pound of pulled pork, half rack of ribs, one all beef sausage link, and a side of baked beans...not too bad. Scott's only serves brisket on Fridays and we were in luck because it was Friday! We were also shortly out of luck since their three briskets that they cook sold out by noon and it was 12:30. Scott uses a gas-wood fueled Southern Pride smoker which hopefully wouldn't let anything get too far off the path of edible BBQ.

The pulled pork we indulged in was pulled into long, fresh, flavorful strands of pork shoulder interwined with smoke-kissed, delicious pieces of outer bark. No sauce needed here, folks. While a pork butt might be one of the easiest things to smoke, it's still nice to see places do it well. More than 75% of places we visit can't decently smoke a pork butt which should tell you a lot about the rest of the menu. Our meal went down hill after the pulled pork though. The ribs were old, tough, and greasy. The all beef sausage tasted like it was straight out of a pack of Oscar Meyers. That's not a good thing in the BBQ world.

I know I've got to cut them a little slack since the whole place had been operating without power. The pulled pork was great. I'll have to come back another Friday to hopefully get some of their brisket that I've heard good things about. Not sure how the fresh ribs compare to the ribs we had, and I'd avoid the beef sausage if ever visiting Scott's

Hello all! I have been slacking on my blogging duties.
    For shame!
I had an incident with my computer charger, so I have not had any battery power :( Luckily, Mr J let me use his new laptop to blog and obsess over Pinterest!
Ok, so here is the update. I should be going back to work soon! About 3 weeks. Crazy, I know. Well, in the meantime, we have moved! Our other house in the B-town was a shanty... full on SHANTY. When I say that, I mean it literally was falling apart underneath us. It's a 1930s farm house with no modern luxuries; like a dishwasher or closets. When we were moving out, we found hella mold and bugs. It was so gross. Thankfully, we are out of there and into our new rambler. WOOT! Our new spread was built in 1969 and has so much more space than what we are used to. It's completely updated and renovated, with granite counters, hardwood in the kitchen, brand new cabinets, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The best part... CENTRAL HEATING. No more space cadet heaters! Ah! The yard is very large for our location, and it also has 4 fruit trees. Jenni, there is tons of space for me to finally plant my flowers hahah!
Yesterday, we moved all of our stuff out of the B-town house and hauled it down to P-town. We got moved in fairly quickly, but couldn't fall asleep to save our lives. 6a poked it's ugly head in so early, and we were off to go get my stuff out of storage. It's been over a year and I finally got everything out! What a relief. My couches are like brand new, they had only been used for 2 months before they sat and then got packed up. I have tons of clothes I don't fit in to anymore, and gobs of foofoo decorations.
Here are some pictures of the house as of now. We have a lot to move around and things to get rid of, and a lot to add. The weather has been crap, so the pictures aren't crazy bright.

These are all pictures without much decorating. The 2nd bath is my "travels" bathroom. I put my worldly trinkets I have acquired myself, and from deployed friends over the years. I have a boomerang about the toilet and a rug from Baghdad on the floor. The kiddos room is going to have some cling-on deals on the walls, and I found a rug I am thinking I should put down...seeing as the carpet is white.. The guest room I have put on my never been used zebra bedding and my semi-used bed and dresser. Mr J suggested I put up all of my achievements there, so I put all of my awards and certificates and pageant stuff in there. Ok, so the master is like 50 feet bigger than our old bedroom. It feels monstrous! I have a DIY headboard project I have in my head I want to make, but money and my injury are preventing my tufted headboard from being completed. The living room is nice and big. I should've taken more photos, but eh, I will later. My semi-used furniture fit in PERFECTLY! It's so weird to go from hearing frogs and coyotes at night to cars and trains. I don't mind the suburbs so much because I grew up with a major road in my backyard, plus I am half deaf from C-17s. It's weird to be back in the 'burbs, and moving is still surreal, but we are adjusting well so far.  Anywhoski, I am tired. Good night -- sweet dreams.
